Pakistan Launches Official Moon-Sighting Website

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry Sunday launched first official moon-sighting website and calendar featuring main Islamic dates and months.

The website and calender has been launched for next five years on scientific basis.

The website was launched on Sunday to overcome all the controversies that arise on main Islamic festivals. Named Moon Sighting Pakistan, the website features sections such as a monthly ‘Hijri’ (Islamic) calendar for the next five years, a day-to-day lunar calendar against dates from the Gregorian calendar, and the dates on which the first day of every lunar month will fall.

Some days before Fawad Chaudhry said that the smartphone application for the website was also under preparation to enable people to sight on the moon on their smartphones.

The step is aimed at putting an end to the practice of looking for it physically through telescopes.
