Islamabad: Former Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was arrested by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Wednesday on corruption charges.
Abbasi becomes Pakistan’s third high profile politician caught in corruption case after Nawaz Sharif and Zardari.
Abbasi was arrested due to connection in Liquified natural gas (LNG) scam where he and others were accused of awarding LNG contract for 15 years to a company of their liking in violation of defined rules.
Abbasi is set to be produced before the court in the coming days.
Abbasi served Pakistan as Prime Minister from August 2017 to May 2018, when Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by the Pakistan Supreme court over Panama Papers scandal.
In December 2018, Nawaz Sharif was handed a 7-year prison sentence in Al-Aziziz Steel Mills case.
This June, Zardari was arrested by NAB in connection with fake accounts case.
